What to expect — and what to bring
To make your consultation productive, it helps to gather:
- A list of your major assets and how each is titled (especially whether your apartment is a co-op or a condo).
- Any existing will, trust, power of attorney, or health care proxy.
- For an estate you are settling: the death certificate, the original will if any, and a list of the decedent’s heirs (distributees).
- Questions about taxes, the co-op board process, or family circumstances.
We’ll use this to orient you to the right documents or the right path through your borough’s court.

Finding your borough’s Surrogate’s Court
If you are settling an estate, you will deal with the Surrogate’s Court of the decedent’s borough — for example, Manhattan estates at 31 Chambers Street, New York, NY 10007, and Brooklyn estates at 2 Johnson Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201.
